Held by the Helix: Finding Clarity, Connection, and a New Way Forward
When John Matthew first heard about WholeMind Healing Pathways through a friend, he was already beginning to recognize how deeply his past experiences were impacting his present. A native Arizonan in his twenties and working as an EMT, John was ready to move beyond old trauma and daily emotional struggles—but he had never tried therapy or mental health treatment before.
What stood out to him from the beginning was how supported he felt throughout the process. “The whole experience was great,” he shared. “Nothing took me by surprise.” Ketamine gave him the clarity and mental flexibility he had been looking for. “It helped rewire how I respond to life. I became less reactive, less anxious, and I stopped overthinking everything.” For someone who had been quietly battling daily depression and anxiety, the difference was life-changing.
Despite his initial nervousness, John approached his ketamine sessions with an open mind—and one experience in particular left a lasting impression. During one of his journeys, he saw a double helix with himself and his fiancée at the center. The outer strands of the helix were formed by friends, family, and the people who made up their support system. For him, it was a powerful and vivid representation of his life, love, and the importance of community. “That image has stuck with me,” he said. “It helped me understand how supported I really am.”
One of his biggest goals was to face and heal childhood trauma—and he did. "Processing that old pain and letting go changed everything," John Matthew said. "My overall quality of life is so much better now."
Today, life looks entirely different. He is engaged, raising a young daughter, and completing prerequisite classes for nursing school. He describes his current chapter as “really happy and going smoothly.”
For others who are considering ketamine treatment, John offers honest encouragement: “Even if it’s scary, do it. I was super nervous, but it ended up being one of the most beneficial and transformative things I’ve ever done.” He especially recommends journaling after each session: “Writing helped me process what I went through. Some insights didn’t fully land until a few days later, and journaling brought it all together.”
